Guided Play

What is it?

In guided play, educators use the science of reading scope and sequence combined with their knowledge of students' strengths and needs to identify the literacy skills they want children to develop and intentionally design the play environment, including the centre, materials, and resources, to support these goals. Educators and children may work together to establish the context for play, with the educator providing guidance, prompts, and intentional opportunities to integrate literacy learning throughout the experience. Children remain active participants in their play, making decisions and developing their own play narratives, while the educator uses intentional interactions and scaffolding to support learning within the play context.
