Create a Story Setting with Lego
Skills: Oral Language, Comprehension, Story Elements, Writing
Students use LEGO to create the setting for a story. They may design a setting for their own writing, recreate the setting from a familiar read-aloud, or collaborate with classmates to build the setting for a shared class story. After building, students use their LEGO creation as inspiration for oral storytelling and writing.
- Observe students to determine when support or extension may be needed.
- Prompt students to describe the setting using specific details about the location, characters, objects, weather, or time of day.
- Encourage students to explain how the setting influences what might happen in the story.
- Support oral language development by inviting students to share their ideas before writing.
- Extend learning by having students write about their setting using the LEGO creation or a photograph of it as a visual support.
- Provide opportunities for students to share their setting and writing with peers.
- LEGO or other building blocks
- Writing and drawing materials
- Camera or tablet for photographing completed creations (optional)
- Mentor texts or familiar read-alouds (optional)
