Special Event Invitations
Skills: Phonics, Writing, Oral Language
Students plan a special event within their dramatic play scenario, such as a puppet show, birthday celebration, restaurant grand opening, or pet adoption fair. To attract guests, students create invitations for classmates using drawings, letters, and/or words. Students deliver their invitations, explain the event to their classmates, and welcome guests when the event takes place.
- Notice when children are engaged in play that could be enriched by the inclusion of invitations.
- Share examples of invitations and discuss their purpose and key features, such as who is invited, what the event is, where it will take place, and when it will happen.
- Observe students to determine when support or extension may be needed.
- Model how drawings, letters, and words can be used to communicate information.
- Provide word banks, sentence starters, or visual supports as needed.
- Encourage students to stretch out words and apply letter-sound knowledge when writing invitations.
- Support students in reading their invitations aloud and explaining the event to their classmates.
- Extend learning by encouraging students to create additional materials for their event, such as signs, tickets, menus, schedules, or programs.
- Blank paper or invitation templates

- Envelopes (optional)
