Airport Adventure
Skills: Oral Language, Vocabulary, Phonics, Reading, Writing
Students work together to transform the dramatic play area into an airport. They help plan and create airport features such as a check-in desk, baggage drop-off area, security checkpoint, departure gate, and airplane seating. Students make signs, tickets, passports, luggage tags, boarding passes, and travel information displays to support their play. They take on roles such as passengers, pilots, flight attendants, security officers, and airport staff, using reading and writing to communicate and solve problems throughout the play scenario.
- Facilitate a discussion about what an airport needs and help students create a list of materials and ideas for the play space.
- Record students' ideas on chart paper and encourage them to refer to the list as they create signs, tickets, and other materials.
- Observe students to determine when support or extension may be needed.
- Join the play as a passenger, pilot, or airport employee to model authentic literacy practices.
- As questions during play that may prompt students’ integration of literacy practices (e.g., "How will passengers know where to go?" "Where is the airplane traveling today?" “Do you have a map of the location I can borrow?” "What should passengers do before boarding?"
- Introduce and reinforce airport-related vocabulary (e.g., airport, pilot, passenger, boarding pass, gate, luggage, departure, arrival, security).
- Model writing signs, labels, tickets, and forms by thinking aloud about sounds and letters.
- Support students use of letter-sound knowledge and inventive spelling when creating airport materials (e.g., "What sounds do you hear in the word plane?").
- Extend learning by introducing maps, schedules, destination boards, or travel brochures.
- Cardboard boxes, chairs, or blocks for creating airport areas
- Paper, clipboards, and writing materials
- Sign-making materials
- Samples or templates of tickets, passports, boarding passes, and luggage tags
- Maps, travel brochures, or destination photos (optional)
- Suitcases, backpacks, or luggage props (optional)
- Dramatic play costumes and accessories (optional)
