Letter Detective Mystery
Skills: Letter Knowledge, Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Letter Formation
Students become letter detectives and work together to solve a mystery involving a missing letter. The educator chooses a target letter and creates a list of several words starting with the same letter (e.g., "_at," "_un," "_ob" for the letter s). Students examine the clues, identify the missing letter, and explain how they know it belongs in each word. As each clue is solved, students place a letter card into the blank space, say the letter name and sound, and blend the sounds to read the completed word. Once all the clues have been solved, students write the mystery letter and search the classroom for additional objects, images, or words that begin with or contain the same sound.
- Introduce the activity playfully - a missing letter has disappeared from a message.
- Observe students to determine when support or extension may be needed.
- Encourage students to use letter-sound knowledge to identify the missing letter.
- Prompt students to name the letter, produce its sound, and blend sounds to read completed words.
- Guide students in forming the letter correctly when writing it.
- Extend learning by inviting students to generate additional words that contain the mystery letter or sound.
- Increase the challenge by having multiple missing letters within the same message.
- Message, note, or clues with missing letters (see Letter Detective templates)
- Letter cards or magnetic letters
- Markers or writing tools
- Magnifying glasses, detective badges, or clipboards (optional)
- Alphabet chart or sound wall (optional)
