Children can assume roles of:

Customers: completing order forms and count change to pay for their flowers.

Shopkeepers: reading the orders, writing receipts, and using a cash register to sort coins and provide change.

The educator extended children’s play by initiating a conversation about shopkeepers and running a store. The educator then integrated academic learning goals into children’s play by modeling how to write order forms and receipts, as well as how to count money and provide change.

The idea for the flower shop was co-created by the students and educators. Within this play activity, the students decided how to use the materials and interact with their peers.
